AWARE Minutes: October 31, 2004

Facilitator: Durl Kruse

Timekeeper: Julio

Recorder: Danielle Schumacher

1. Introductions.

2. News of the Week: Carl Estabrook. Among other things, Carl told us
about the importance of the presidential election in Ukraine, the most
recent Osama bin Laden tape, and a report by Johns Hopkins University that
estimates over 100,000 Iraqis have died since the U.S. invasion. Also,
Journalists Without Borders rank the U.S. as 22nd in press freedom.

3. Finances: Linda Evans was not present to report, but we estimate it
to be $2000 and a few hundred and some dollars.

4. Sister Carol Ammons thanked everyone for supporting the Unity March,
and asked everyone to consider joining the NAACP. She is running for
president of the Champaign County branch, and in order to vote for her at
the election meeting in December, you must be a paid member by November
11. Send your membership form to Carol Ammons, 1108 N. Busey in Urbana. If
you would like to hear more about Carol's plans, she can be reached at
lifestratinst19@sbcglobal.net. Danielle will bring more copies of Carol's
brochure and the NAACP membership forms to the next AWARE meeting.

5. Postcards for Peace: the postcards are beautiful! Come see them on
November 14 from 2 to 5 at the Cowboy Monkey.

6. Veteran's Day Event: Saturday Nov. 13 at McKinley Foundation. See
AWARE homepage for more details.

7. P4P: sign-making at Peter's house beforehand THIS SATURDAY. [ed. note
(REC) - cancelled due to lack of interest].

8. Voting flyers: Randall and others flyered right up until the election.

9. Democracy NOW: Randall reported that progress has slowed enough to cause
him to consider gearing up for another round of negotiations and action.

10. Hijacking Catastrophe: Randall asked for a volunteer to submit the
film to UPTV for a second month of showings, since Paul's copy that
is currently being shown can only run for a set amount of time. Carol
A. volunteered to submit.

11. Military Recruitment: Durl showed everyone a packet of information
that was donated to AWARE. It includes lesson plans, pamphlets, and other
materials to guide educators who want to address the issue of military
recruitment at school.

12. Inauguration plans?

13. AWARE agreed to cosponsor the IDF Fall Dinner.

14. Peter suggested that AWARE sponsor a van to the School of the Americas
Vigil/Protest.
